Maelstrom Music (m(l'str(m myõõ'zík) 1. A state of mind experienced by artists, editors, writers, etc. 2. Anxiety experienced while on deadline, in the recording studio, etc.

Curtis Smith, while performing A&R duties for a small independent record company developed Maelstrom Music (The Company) in 1993. So small in fact that the label did not include promotion for the records they released. Seeing that the bands on the label (as well as others) were making their own albums, Curtis started a part-time hobby sending out their product to magazines and newspapers that would write about them, and only charging them for the cost of stamps. The goal was to help independent bands and labels get a head start in exposing themselves to the masses the cheapest and most effective way possible. Eventually, Curtis became more involved with publicity for independent and unsigned bands, while keeping day jobs at various record companies in various publicity departments. After 6 years of working at various labels including American, Backyard/Scotti Brothers, Interscope, and Risk Records, and seeing the success of his efforts for independent bands, he decided to take his company to a different level by continuing to work with the independents on a full time basis. Since its inception, Maelstrom Music PR has continued to work with independent and unsigned bands by bringing to them all the elements that are needed to successfully promote themselves while keeping costs at an affordable rate. Recently, the company has grown into becoming a source for A&R reps at various record labels as well, and a network for booking agents, managers, radio promoters, manufacturers, distributors, and music supervisors that have the same work ethic. Maelstrom Music is constantly looking to help other bands and labels on their way to success in the music industry, and will consider that as it's main focus in the years to come.
